MediaTek's Dimensity 9400 Might Outperform Apple's A18 Pro GPU

MediaTek is set to introduce its latest flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400, next month. The Taiwanese semiconductor firm has made ambitious claims regarding the graphics capabilities of this chipset, which includes Arm’s Immortalis-G925 GPU. MediaTek describes it as “the highest performing, most efficient GPU to date.”

Recent benchmark data lend credence to these assertions, particularly regarding sheer performance. The results even surpass those of Apple’s new A18 Pro chipset, which is adept at running AAA titles like Resident Evil: Village and Death Stranding. In the GFX Aztec 1440p off-screen Vulkan benchmark, the GPU within the Dimensity 9400 achieved an outstanding score of 134 frames per second (fps). This significantly outperforms its rivals, with Apple's A18 Pro coming in at 72 fps and last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 achieving 95 fps in the same test.

The GFXBench suite’s Aztec test is crucial for assessing mobile graphics capabilities, as it simulates challenging 3D gaming environments. This benchmarking specifically stresses the limits of graphic hardware, emphasizing the Vulkan API, which is recognized for its high-performance features.

The “1440p” label signifies that the test was performed at QHD resolution, which requires more detailed rendering. However, it's essential to understand that the “off-screen” aspect of this test removes the impact of display resolution, allowing for a more straightforward assessment of the GPU's capabilities.

While these benchmark figures highlight the potential of the Dimensity 9400 and its Immortalis-G925 GPU, the actual performance of a chipset largely depends on how it is implemented in a smartphone.

Therefore, the true effectiveness of MediaTek’s newest product will only become apparent once it is included in flagship smartphones slated for 2025. We will need to wait and see which top-tier phones will adopt the Dimensity 9400 in 2025.
